This “behind the scenes” look at the world of modelling was seen through the experiences of two beautiful teenage high fashion models (called “paper dolls”), Taryn Blake (Nicollette Sheridan) and Laurie Caswell (Terry Farrell).
Dinah Caswell (Jennifer Warren) was Laurie’s overprotective mother, and Julia Blake (Brenda Vaccaro) was Taryn’s ambitious and scheming mother.
The beautiful Racine (Morgan Fairchild), a former fashion model herself, ran the Racine Model Agency and was in direct competition with Grant Harper (Lloyd Bridges), the devious owner of the Harper World Wide Modelling Agency.
Also vying for a piece of the money to be made from the “paper dolls” were Colette Ferrier (Lauren Hutton), the owner of Ferrier Cosmetics; Mark Bailey (Roscoe Born), a fashion reporter for Newsbeat Magazine; and David Fenton (Richard Beymer), the owner of Tempus Sportswear.
Other regulars in the series were Dinah’s husband, Michael Caswell (John Bennett Perry); Grant’s son Wesley Harper (Dack Rambo); David’s wife Blair Fenton (Mimi Rogers), Blair’s friend Sara Frank (Anne Schedeen); Racine’s assistant, Sandy (Jonathan Frakes); fashion reviewer Grayson Carr (Larry Linville); loan shark Larry Pennell (Edward Power); Chris York (Don Bowron), a model; and Sammy (Mark Schneider), the photographer.
The series was cancelled prematurely and ended with unresolved plot lines, including a stalker, an impending takeover and Mrs Grant Harper missing at sea.
In the 1982 television movie-length pilot of the same name, Joan Collins played Racine, with Darryl Hannah as Taryn; Alexandra Paul as Laurie; and Joan Hackett as Taryn’s mother, Julia Blake.
