1 9 6 5 – 1 9 6 7 (UK)
Produced by Granada’s Head of Light Entertainment Johnny Hamp and debuting on Tuesday 31 August 1965, this nightly local programme replaced the continuity announcer spots and featured world headlines and views from people in the news.
A ten-minute segment called Good Evening from Granada in the North aired briefly at 4.50 pm each evening presenting news headlines and a summary of the evening’s programming ahead.
A full “late-night final” round-up of music, features and news – billed as “Tomorrow’s News Today” – was then broadcast late each weeknight, usually just prior to closedown. This segment also provided a television showcase for new talent such as The Strollers and Fritz, Mike and Mo (surely you remember them).
Granada in the North was renamed On Air in late 1967, becoming a local documentary feature at 6 pm before being merged into Granada Reports with the introduction of colour TV.
Presenters included Bill Grundy, Brian Trueman, Peter Eckersley and Michael Parkinson (pictured above).
