When Lets’ Make a Deal left NBC for ABC in the same daytime time slot (1.30 pm), this show was chosen as its replacement and ultimately unsuccessful competition.
The lead character was Arthur Adams (Conard Fowkes), a rugged, pipe-smoking, ex-military, 35-year-old criminal trial lawyer whose background gave him international contacts for worldwide troubleshooting, which he used to assist international police organisations.
He served as legal counsel to former surgeon Dr Katherine Logan (Gretchen Walther), who was charged with the accidental death of a patient and who was in love with Arthur.
Rounding out the cast during its half-year run were devious white-collar criminal Earl Harriman (Nat Polen); Mark Utley (Stephen Joyce) and Nick Turner (Tony LoBianco) – two suspicious types with whom Arthur consulted – and the Jaffes: Senator Robert Jaffe (Joseph Daly), his wife Mimi (Rita Gam), and their daughter Allyn (Linda Blair).
Hidden Faces was the first of a number of NBC shows that flopped against Lets’ Make a Deal and As the World Turns. In fact, NBC didn’t mount a successful competitor until Days of Our Lives expanded to an hour in 1975.
