“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”
This BBC version of the literary classic was dramatised for television in six parts by Nemone Lethbridge and marked the 150th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death.
In the lead roles were Celia Bannerman as Elizabeth Bennet and Australian actor Lewis Fiander as Mr Darcy.
Michael Gough and Vivian Pickles were Mr and Mrs Bennets (he female-swamped and she with a husband-hunting obsession), and Sylvia Coleridge appeared as the redoubtable Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
The middle Bennet sister, Mary, is omitted from this production.
Location filming took place in the West Country, with ‘Netherfield Park’ set at Hinton Charterhouse near Bath and ‘Meryton’ located in the village of Lacock, Wiltshire.
