This early animated series from Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin was broadcast by the BBC in July and August 1960 and featured the underwater adventures of a small seahorse named Cyrus. Episodes were narrated by Postgate.
In the first episode, Cyrus went swimming against his mother’s wishes into a cave and discovered a wreck and the official seal of King Neptune. He embarked on an exciting journey to return the seal to Neptune’s court, encountering sharks and other dangers along the way, but finding a good friend in Shrimp.
Six more stories about Cyrus and Shrimp were broadcast on Wednesday afternoons in August and September 1962 as The Mermaid’s Pearls.
Far, far away in the Western Sea, there was a rock, and sometimes, when the tide was low, the happy mermaid would go and sit there singing her song – but one day, something terrible happened.
The mermaid lost her necklace of four pearls and a locket with her name on it.
Cyrus and Shrimp found her hiding in a secret cave and decided to set off to search for her pearls.
Their search took them into the black deep, where they met the Sea Cows, explored a sunken city (where Shrimp forgot everything) and ultimately met King Neptune.
