The year is 1940, and young women from all walks of life are recruited to work in the Women’s Land Army to do the jobs in the countryside that the menfolk did before going off to war: Milking cows, feeding chickens, baling hay . . .
The three central characters in Backs To The Land are cheerful Cockney Jenny Dabb (Terese Stevens), down-to-Earth Jewish girl Shirley Bloom (Phillippa Howell) and debutante Daphne Finch-Beauchamp (Marilyn Galsworthy).
When Galsworthy left the show (to appear in the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me), her place was taken by Pippa Page as showgirl Bunny Burroughs.
They are sent to Crabtree Farm in Norfolk, which is owned by the tight-fisted and cantankerous farmer Tom Whitlow (John Stratton). He wants to send them packing immediately but the girls are determined to prove that they can do the work of any man.
Anne Shelton sang the patriotic title theme.
