8 x 90 minute episodes
Billy Jim Hawkins (James Stewart) was a very clever ol’ country lawyer whose drawl and laid-back manner (“moral dilemmas give me gas”) often fooled his adversaries into underestimating his skills as an attorney.
Billy Jim’s office was located in Beauville, a small town in West Virginia, although his cases often took him to other places around the country.
Along with his sidekick and cousin, nicely played by veteran character actor Strother Martin, he squared off against big-city decadence (the opening episode featured a gay apartment house, an alcoholic actress and an attempted rape of a Lolita-like minor) before defending a country fellow accused of committing a blood-feud murder with a muzzle-loading rifle.
