Saturday mornings were a magical time for any kid watching US network affiliates in the 1970s, as the lineups were packed with cartoons and entertainment aimed directly at them.
Producers Sid and Marty Krofft, designers of The Banana Splits and producers of beloved classics such as H.R Pufnstuf and Land of The Lost, provided a great deal of the programming, with many of their most memorable characters and shows airing on the anthological series, The Krofft Supershow.
Kaptain Kool and the Kongs (pictured) – comprising Superchick, Nashville, Turkey (and in the first season, Flatbush) – were a colourful rock band who acted as hosts of this weekly show.
During the first season, Kaptain Kool and the Kongs had a very glam image but toned down their image for the second season where they wore matching outfits.
Besides introducing the various shows, the group would perform songs and participate in various skits.
The first season featured episodes of Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, Dr Shrinker, Wonderbug and – for a short time – reruns of The Lost Saucer.
During the second season, only Wonderbug stayed and Magic Mongo and Bigfoot and Wildboy were added.
Kaptain Kool and the Kongs went on to make appearances on other Krofft produced shows, like The Donny and Marie Show and the Krofft Superstar Hour.
