Country-oriented singer and composer Mac Davis had three tries as host of his own NBC variety series, in the summer of 1974, early 1975, and the spring of 1976.
None of the three attempts attracted a sufficient audience to stay on the schedule for more than a few months.
Regular features on all three shows were Mac’s singing of his own songs, reminiscing about his growing-up years in Texas, and informal chats with the audience.
In fact, he was often seen seated with the audience during part of the show, while he answered questions or sang and played his guitar. He would also improvise songs from title suggestions submitted by the audience.
The 1976 edition had, in addition to Mac and his guest star, three regulars: the mime team of Shields and Yarnell, comedian Ron Silver, and a group of singers and dancers known collectively as Strutt.
