1 9 7 8 – 1 9 7 9 (Australia)
12 x 50/45 minute episodes
Marcia Hines Music premiered on Australia’s ABC on Saturday 11 March 1978, featuring the talented ex-pat American singer who reigned in Australia at the time as “queen of pop”.
For six weeks at 7.30 pm on Saturday evenings, the show – possibly the finest variety series ever produced in Australia – set new production standards with stunning costumes, sumptuous sets, and faultless choreography.
The series provided a perfect showcase for Hines’ powerful voice as she sang her hits and performed in lavish production numbers, including Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend, a selection of songs from Jesus Christ Superstar, an extended medley of Beatles numbers, and the 1920s flapper-style Dishrag.
Recorded before a live studio audience at the ABC’s Sydney studios, guests included Doug Ashdown, Jon English, Trevor White, John Farnham, Linda George, Colleen Hewett, Ross Ryan, Darryl Cotton, Glenn Shorrock, Kim Durant, Don Burrows, Anne Kirkpatrick and actor John Waters in the less familiar role of singer, teaming superbly with Marcia for a version of the Elton John/Kiki Dee hit Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.
Marcia returned in 1979 with a further six shows – this time in the better time slot of 8.15 pm on Friday nights – with the title shortened to simply Marcia’s Music.
