“Many centuries ago, three athletes were transported from their native lands to my world. Here they were granted astounding powers and eternal youth. They were returned to Earth. Their mission: to watch over the human race helping the good to survive and flourish. In the course of history, their names have become legends.”
At a time when the Earth was young, Sentinel One, an intelligent life force from another galaxy, selected three young people from Earth for training on his planet.
Granting them astounding powers and eternal youth, the three Earthlings – Astraea (voiced by Dee Timberlake), a shapeshifter who could assume any living form; Hercules (voiced by George DiCenzo), the appropriately named strongman of the group; and Mercury (Evan C Kim), who could move at the speed of light – were subsequently returned to their native planet to watch over the human race and protect the planet with their superhuman powers and unique abilities.
For their missions, they followed directions from Sentinel One (also voiced by George DiCenzo), who appeared as a holographic projection of a head.
The Sentinels were also assisted in their adventures by a robot named MO (for “Maintenance Operator”), who also provided comic relief.
From their secret hideout inside a volcano, the trio faced adversaries, including Morpheus (a rogue Sentinel with all of their powers); Anubis (an alien being who was worshipped as a god by the ancient Egyptians); a sorceress; giant robots; and other menaces.
The series from Filmation was retitled Space Sentinels halfway through the season.
