“We’re gonna fool around and fill the room with laughter”
Tomfoolery was a literary cartoon based on the poetry of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear (a good part of it was presented in rhyming couplets).
Its brainy, zany humour was delivered courtesy of delightfully surreal riddles, puns and nonsensical jokes, with characters such as the Obsequious Ornamental Ostrich, the Fitzgibbious Fish, the Umbrageous Umbrella Maker, the Scroobious Snake, the Enthusiastic Elephant and the Yonghy Bonghy Bo.
The show was produced by Rankin Bass and was shown on NBC on Saturday mornings.
Tomfoolery benefited from the talents of the late, great Romeo Muller Jr (among his writing credits are the scripts for Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town, Frosty the Snowman and The Little Drummer Boy).
