26 x 30/60 minute episodes
This animated series was based on the NBC sitcom of the same name, which began on 22 September 1986.
This series related the adolescent days of ALF, when the diminutive hairball with an attitude was a mere 193 years old, and his parents Bob and Flo, his brother Curtis, and his sister Augie, plus assorted pals at the restaurant on the planet Melmac.
In 1988, the show became an hour long and added the “ALF Tales” segment, which employed the cast in takeoffs of fairy tales. On 16 September 1989, ALF Tales became a series in its own right, airing at 8.00 am while ALF continued to air at noon.
The nighttime sitcom ended on 18 June 1990, and the two cartoons died two months later.
The cartoon briefly generated controversy when a Long Island, New York viewer discovered that a subliminal shot of the Statue of Liberty came up during an explosion in a first-season episode. The president of Studio Korumi (the Japanese firm handling the animation) acknowledged that the graphic did indeed appear in one frame as a joke (since it was an American product).
