Premiering on Thursday 9 January 1986, this Yorkshire Television series presented bearded botanist David Bellamy and his all-electric lady computer helpmate, Smart Alice (Kate Lee).
The programmes were filmed at Bellamy’s home in County Durham, from where he went in search of amazing and sometimes threatened animals and plants.
For five series, he talked about wildlife and conservation – explaining how young people could play a part in preserving Britain’s natural beauty – while Smart Alice produced cutting-edge (for the time) graphics and conjured up photographs from around the globe.

David Bellamy died from vascular dementia at a care home in Barnard Castle on 11 December 2019, aged 86.
