1 9 8 3 – 1 9 9 0 (Canada)
124 x 30 minute episodes
Filmed in and around Vancouver and the scenic coast of British Columbia (Canada), Danger Bay revolved around crusading marine veterinarian Grant “Doc” Roberts (Donnelly Rhodes), who was head of the Vancouver Aquarium.
Grant was a widower, and his two teenage children, Nicole (Ocean Hellman) and Jonah (Christopher Crabb), shared an interest in his work. He also had an ongoing “relationship” with comely pilot Joyce Carter (Deborah Wakeham) and later attractive helicopter pilot JL Duval (Susan Walden), the owner of Harbor Air.
Episodes followed Grant, Nicole and Jonah as they attempted to maintain the clinic and help both people and animals as necessary. A sample of storylines found Doc and his family involved in such worthy pursuits as adopting a wayward otter, protecting baby whales, thwarting toxic waste dumpers, poachers, horse rustlers and illegal falcon exporters, and reforming an elderly couple trying to beef up the tourist trade with a phoney sea monster.
The series – free of gratuitous violence and strong in family values – was a co-production between the CBC, the US cable Disney Channel, and Telefilm Canada (the federal broadcast fund set up for independent producers of Canadian programming).
Donnelly Rhodes died of cancer in January 2018, aged 80. Susan Walden passed away on 17 August 2020, aged 63.
