This five-part BBC2 comedy starring Lynn Redgrave was based on Letters From a Fainthearted Feminist and More From Martha by journalist Jill Tweedie, which presented an ongoing correspondence between fictional characters Martha and Mary.
Lynn played the part of Martha whose faltering commitment to the women’s movement was forever frustrated by the suburban domestic reality of looking after her new baby, her two children and her civil servant husband Josh (Jonathan Newth) – who thought that voting for Margaret Thatcher was enough to show his support for sex equality.
Martha wanted passion, politics and a Part To Play – but she would settle for a clean kitchen, good kids and a few hours to herself on a Saturday afternoon.
Her “sister” Mary (Sarah Neville) found it only too easy, living without responsibilities in her militant squat, to constantly urge Martha to be more faithful to the cause.
The series brought Redgrave back from Hollywood to work in England for the first time in eight years.
