Posted as the new British Consul-General to a banana republic in “one of the armpits of Latin America”, Harriet Emily Farrington (Angela Thorne) has to prove herself in a job that has been too hot to handle for her male predecessor, a task made even harder because her colleague – former Coldstream Guardsman Major Willoughby-Gore (John Quayle) – wants her out.
As he does his level best to take the shine off her brass plate, she has to deal with revolutions, budget cuts, corruption, defectors, lost tourists and the like.
Fortunately, Harriet Farrington has plenty of experience, having worked all over the world and become known as ‘the diplomatic bag’.
The sitcom enjoyed moderate success over two series, despite the incredible cheapness of the sets.
While viewers would not have expected real-location footage from South America, the scenery at Yorkshire TV’s Leeds studio completely failed to convince.
