This weekly soap opera told the lives of the people who lived in the (fictional) village of Glenroe in County Wicklow, Ireland.
The main protagonists were the Byrne and McDermott/Moran families, related by the marriage of Miley Byrne (Mick Lally) to Biddy McDermott (Mary McEvoy). Other important characters included publican Teasy McDaid (Maureen Toal), Roman Catholic priest Tim Devereux (Donal Farmer), the Reverend George Black (Enda Oates), who was the Church of Ireland Rector of the village, Biddy’s cousin Fidelma Kelly (Eunice McMenamin), Blackie Connors (Liam Heffernan), George Manning (Alan Stanford) and Stephen Brennan (Robert Carrickford).
The series quickly shot to the top of the Irish TV charts and remained there until the show ended in 2001. The final episode was transmitted on 6 May 2001, attracting an audience of 591,000 viewers.
