George Segal played Daedalus Patrick Murphy, an insurance investigator with a long history of alcoholism, bankruptcy and general instability – although he was trying to get his financial affairs in order and hadn’t touched a drop of booze in eight months.
Murphy shared an apartment with gorgeous half-Japanese, half-Italian would-be model Kimiko Fannuchi (Maggie Han), who sometimes worked as his assistant.
Murphy’s chubby supervisor was Wesley Harden (Josh Mostel) who often covered for Murphy with the company’s bosses, Harriett Tapplinger (Lynne Randall) and Victor Beaudine (Charles Rocket), who were not enamoured of Murphy and his maverick style.
Meanwhile, Murphy’s ex-wife Marissa (Kim Lankford) did her best to block him from seeing their 8-year-old daughter, Kathleen (Sarah Sawatsky). He kept taking her to court to secure visitation rights but kept losing.
Murphy’s Law was George Segal’s second flop series in as many years (see also Take Five).
