Fourteen-year-old Andrew Clements (Jerry O’Connell) lives with his divorced real estate agent mother, Stephanie (Wanda Cannon), and sister, Erin (Marsha Moreau), at 43 Meadow Drive in the (fictional) suburb of Briarwood in Toronto, Canada.
One day, Andrew wanders into the lab of his wacky neighbour, Dr Benjamin Jeffcoate (Derek McGrath) – the fifth smartest man in the world, whom Andrew called “Dr J” – and is hit by a blue photon beam from an experimental machine.
The rays endow him with extraordinary powers – the ability to float weightlessly (but not fly, so he uses deodorant cans to propel himself in the air), super-speed and invulnerability – which he uses to help people and foil evil, basing his alter ego on his favourite comic book character, Ultraman.
Andrew attends Briarwood High School, and his favourite hangout is Jerry’s Burger Barn.
Ruth Schellenbach (Elizabeth Leslie) is his nosy neighbour. She lives at 47 Meadow Drive and is an Elvis fanatic.
Ruth has a dog named Elvis and is a member of the Women’s Helicopter Action Rescue Team. In her youth, she was a member of the Bruise Brothers roller skating team.
