Benjamin ‘Beans’ Baxter (Jonathan Ward) is a typically normal 17-year-old boy. He lives in the small town of Witches Creek, Kansas, with his mother, Susan (Elinor Donahue), his father, Benjamin Sr (Rick Lenz), and his younger brother, Scooter (Scott Bremner).

As the series begins, Ben Sr. is transferred to Washington DC and he and his family take up residence at 1341 Maple Street with Beans enrolling in Georgetown High School.

Unbeknownst to the Baxter family, Ben Sr. is actually a courier for ‘The Network’, a postal service for the secret agencies of the US government, which is headed by Number One (John Vernon). The family believe he is a mailman.

Beans stumbles upon his father’s secret life when he witnesses him being kidnapped by an evil organisation called UGLI (Underground Government Liberation Inter-group), who are headed by Mr Sue (Kurtwood Smith).

In an attempt to rescue his father, Beans is recruited by Number One as a spy-courier for The Network.

Darla (Kristin Cumming) was Beans’ original girlfriend in Witches Creek. In Washington, he is pursued by Cake Lase (Karen Mistal) – “the most gorgeous girl on his high school campus.” Beans, however, has eyes for nobody but Svetlana (Shawn Weatherly), a beautiful Soviet defector.

Other recurring characters included Cake’s sister, Cupcake Lase (Sarah Sawatsky), Number One’s wife, Mrs Number One (Lorraine Foreman) and Number One’s son, Little One (Shawn Clements).
