“There’s a wise old man from the bottom of the sea . . .”
Professor Ken Martin, head of the school of architecture at Liverpool Polytechnic, provided the academic expertise as the titular professor in this series from Central Television.
The good professor taught a studio full of children about building and building materials, explaining the mysteries of architecture and often using the catchphrase “If you don’t know – ask!”
Each week, the professor tackled a different theme – stone, timber, bridges, iron and glass, concrete and fabrics – in a list of locations including London Zoo, Wells Cathedral and Stonehenge.
Professor Lobster was assisted by 13-year-old Lizzy Lobster (Claire Thompson).
The professor drove around in the Lobstermobile – a 1966 two-door Morris 1100 converted to look like a lobster by Anglo American Auto Services, a Nottingham garage specialising in American cars and custom vehicles for TV productions.
