There’s a voice that keeps on calling me
Down the road, that’s where I’ll always be
Oh, every stop I make, I make a new friend
Can’t stay for long, just turn around and I’m gone again
This famously catchy theme song told the sentiments of London, a German Shepherd who travelled by train from town to town in order to help as many people as he could.
With no human regular, London was the bona fide star of this Canadian-produced live-action series. He was the Mary Poppins of dogs, coming into people’s lives when they needed him and moving on when his work was done.
The character of the travelling dog was originally created by Dorrell McGowan for a 1958 TV movie, which was then followed up by this 1963-65 television series, filmed in Vancouver.
A later remake of the show ran from 1979-85 on Canada’s CTV network. Megan Follows – best known for her portrayal as the title character in Anne of Green Gables (1985) – starred in a few episodes in 1981-82, but not even her girlish charms were enough to sway London from his hobo lifestyle.
