Although Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts” characters had appeared in many TV specials since 1965, this CBS production was their first regular prime-time series.

In each half-hour animated episode, Charlie Brown and his friends re-enacted various events from American history. In the premiere, for example, they found themselves aboard the Mayflower in 1620.

In subsequent episodes, Charlie and the gang witnessed the founding fathers’ discussion of putting together the Constitution, watched the Wright Brothers’ first flight, met various US presidents and travelled into space.

The voice of Charlie Brown was supplied by a fourteen-year-old girl, Erin Chase. Wynton Marsalis, Dave Brubeck, and David Benoit all contributed original music to the series.
