Archer’s Goon is the complex plot of a town secretly administered by a mafia of seven wizard siblings – Archer, Shine, Dillian, Hathaway, Torquil, Erskine and Venturus – who extract a tax from every aspect of the town’s life and commerce.
Young Howard Sykes (Jamie de Courcey) lives with his parents, Quentin (Roger Lloyd Pack) an author and professor, and Catriona (Susan Jameson) a music teacher, his sister Anthea (Angela Forry) – who is always called “Awful” because of her constant screaming – and Fifi (Victoria Worsley), the family’s au pair.
One day, the Sykes family are disturbed to find the intimidating Goon (Morgan Jones) in their kitchen, demanding two thousand words of gibberish that Quentin apparently owes to Archer.
And so the Sykes family set off to find Archer (Thomas Lockyer) and find themselves embroiled in a complicated sibling rivalry between the seven wizards.
Quentin steadfastly refuses to write the two thousand words and so the Sykes’ gas and electricity are cut off, the shops are closed to them, their bank accounts are frozen, Howard and Awful are kidnapped (although quickly rescued by the Goon and Torquil) and the street outside the Sykes’ house is dug up and re-paved over and over again as a form of punishment.
This six-part children’s sci-fi comedy-thriller series was based on the fantasy novel by Diana Wynne Jones and won the BAFTA Award for Children’s Programmes in 1993.
