1 9 9 3 – 1 9 9 4 (UK)
11 x 30 minute episodes
When her husband dies, attractive Bridget (Sheila Gish) finds she can’t meet the financial demand of her large house in Brighton (Sussex) without his income. Her solution is to take in lodgers.
Two other “belles” soon take up her offer – a dim but likeable widowed farmer’s daughter called Annie (Wendy Craig), and a cynical and sarcastic divorced teacher called Frances (Sheila Hancock)
Frances’ tactless and over-protective mother, Josephine (Jean Boht) eventually moves in also, to hover over and generally annoy her daughter.
This British attempt to make a local version of The Golden Girls used the same scripts but – despite an excellent cast – the concept did not translate well from Miami to Brighton and the show was cancelled after 11 episodes.
