This uneasy NBC comedy series starred Lisa Darr as Rachel Brennan, a young grade two prosecutor with the Baltimore DA’s office. Rachel is the yuppie type and lives in a fashionable home at 3611 Tenner Street.
Her long-lost older brother, Arlo Weed (David Keith), is a brash and wily hillbilly con artist who’s slicker n’ frog hair.
The Weeds were a poor Florida family. Their mother put Rachel up for adoption to give her a better life. The mother then abandoned Arlo “when she went gator hunting with Billy Moses and never came back.”
Arlo and his two children – Beauty and King Hollis – move in with Rachel when he discovers she is looking for him.
Beauty (Meghan Andrews) is 12 years old. She got her name, Arlo says, “when she popped out of the missus, and I said what a beauty. The nurse took me seriously and wrote it down.”
Beauty sometimes believes her father wishes she were a boy: “Last Christmas, he bought me a bat. I had to kill it when it bit me.” She now has a pet snake named Stinky.
King Hollis (Chris Stacy) is a 16-year-old “hulking dimwit” who says, “Sometimes I’m as dumb as a post.” “Son,” Arlo replies, “if you were half as useful as a post, I’d be proud of you.”
King got his name, Arlo says, “when me and the wife were playing strip checkers, and she said, ‘King me.’ I did, and nine months later, our son was born.”
Rachel and Arlo are as different as night and day. While Rachel struggles to make ends meet as an assistant DA, Arlo devises various cons to make money (such as selling Bibles “personally autographed by Moses”).
His dream is to open his own business, Weed Tours International.
Rachel frequently leans on her co-workers Irene (Peri Gilpin) and Marty (Perry Anzilotti) for support.
Guest stars on the show included Kirstie Alley, Leslie Nielsen, Brenda Vaccaro and Parker Stevenson.
