Vin (Alan Cinis) and Marge (Rhonda Doyle) Shipley live above their fish and chip shop in South London with their only son, Keith (Paul Giles).
The fish shop is struggling, and life is tough in South London, but Keith is determined to make his parents – a pair of “right misery guts” – smile again. All his efforts to cheer his parents fail, so he eventually decides to find a way to get his parents to Australia, where the sun always shines.
After Keith (accidentally) burns down his parents’ shop, the Shipleys decide to migrate to Australia with the insurance money.
They arrive at Orchid Cove, a small (fictional) town in Queensland, and open a new fish and chip shop named “Paradise Fish ‘n’ Chips”.
Keith befriends a local girl named Tracy (Brooke Harman), who introduces him to activities such as surfing.
Vin and Marge become friends with Tracy’s father, “Wagga” (Peter Marshall) and Dougie (Andrew Windsor), the mechanic. All is well until arrogant businessman Arnold Flashman (Mark Hembrow) opens up a rival fish and chip shop named “Ocean Fresh Fish ‘n’ Fries” near the Shipleys’ shop.
Keith decides to help support his family by sneaking off to discover opals in the opal fields in Southern Australia. On his way, he is kidnapped by a trucker named Col (Bruce Venables) and a service station owner called Mick (David Letch).
When Keith is discovered missing from Orchid Cove, his parents set off looking for him, followed by Wagga and Tracy. After Tracy and her dog rescue Keith from a collapsed opal mine, the group are happily reunited.
Back in Orchid Cove, a frustrated and devastated Vin decides to sell his shop to Flashman. Keith begs him not to sell and organises a Fish and Chips Championship competition to determine the best fish and chip shop in Orchid Cove.
The local policeman, Baz (Malcolm Cork), judges the contest and declares Paradise Fish ‘n’ Chips the winner. And so the Shipleys stay in business while Flashman closes Ocean Fresh Fish ‘n’ Fries and leaves Orchid Cove for good.
The Channel Nine series was aired in the UK on CBBC (Children’s BBC).
