Journalist Maya Gallo (Laura San Giacomo) is fired from her job as a TV news writer at New York’s Channel 8 – for making an anchorwoman cry on the air with some gag copy on the teleprompter – and ends up working as an articles editor for her womanising father, Jack (George Segal), who owns a sleazy women’s fashion magazine called Blush that he began back in 1967.
Jack had been divorced multiple times and had remarried Allie (Kristen Bauer van Straten), a woman almost 30 years his junior who had, in fact, been a classmate of Maya.
Other characters at the Manhattan-based magazine included former-model Nina van Horn (Wendie Malick), who was the bossy and scheming editor of Blush; balding (and somewhat hysterical) photographer, Elliot (Enrico Colantoni); and Dennis Finch, Jack Gallo’s sneaky, back-stabbing young yuppie Executive Assistant.
Finch (played by former Saturday Night Live performer David Spade) became the most popular character on the show, with his two-faced, self-serving actions. He married fashion model Adrienne Barker (Rebecca Romijn) in the third season but they divorced a year later.
In the final episode, Maya became the editor of Blush when Jack retired.
