This NBC series related the events in the lives of four generations of the same family living under one roof.

Gil Buckman (Ed Begley Jr) is an investment counsellor. He is married to Karen (Jayne Atkinson), and they are the parents of 10-year-old Kevin (Max Elliott Slade), 9-year-old Justin (Zachary La Voy) and 7-year-old Taylor (Thora Birch).

Frank Buckman (William Windom) is Gil’s father. He is married to Marilyn (Sheila MacRae).

Gil’s older sister, Helen Lamkin (Maryedith Burrell), is divorced. She is the mother of Julie (Bess Meyer) and Gary (a very young Leonardo Di Caprio).

Julie is married to Todd (David Arquette). Gil’s younger sister, Susan (Susan Norman), is a schoolteacher married to Nathan (Ken Ober). They are the parents of Patty (Ivyann Schwan).

Also creating chaos is Marilyn’s mother, Great Grandma Greenwall (Mary Jackson).

The series was based on the 1989 Ron Howard film of the same name starring Steve Martin. Zachary La Voy reprised the role of Justin Buckman from the movie.

This series was remade in 2010 (with the family name changed to Braverman), running for six seasons.
