This short-run spring try-out series from NBC revolved around Gabrielle “Gaby” Stepjak (Gaby Hoffmann), an 11-year-old bundle of energy.
Gaby was president of her sixth-grade class at the Walter Mondale Middle School in Parkwood, St. Louis, and lived with her travel agent mother, Jean (Patricia Heaton), her optician stepfather, Steven (Anthony Tyler Quinn), her 16-year-old sister, Samantha (Nikki Cox), and her 4-year-old brother, Evan (Joe Tello), at 1402 Manton Drive.
Gaby was a member of the swim team at the Park Recreation Center and felt that the worst punishment she could get was no phone privileges (“it’s totally barbaric”). When she did something wrong, her mother gave her the “anybody can become President speech.”
Samantha knew she was beautiful and could have any guy she wanted – but she dated “losers,” as Dad Steve called them. To get Gaby to do something for her, Sam bribed her with clothes. Gaby considered her older sister “an Afterschool Specialwaiting to happen”.
Gaby’s best friend was Jane Schmidt (Raegan Kotz), a brash young girl who wore bubble gum-flavoured lip gloss and admired Samantha for her breasts (“I hope to get breasts that great, too”).
When she visited Gaby, Jane tried to sneak a beer out of the refrigerator, and whenever Jane used a bad word, Gaby feared Jane’s mother would think Jane learned it from her.
