When city doctor Nicky Somerville (Sara Wiseman) is punched by a patient and discovers her boyfriend (Simon Prast) is having an affair, she decides to move to the small (fictional) rural town of Bassett – situated near a prominent mountain peak known as Mercy Peak – where she thinks the pace will be slower and things more simple.
Episodes focus on Nicky adapting to the unpredictable realities of rural medicine while initially clashing with her stuffy, traditional, but deeply caring new boss, Dr William Kingsley (Jeffrey Thomas).
Dr Kingsley’s son, Alistair (Craig Parker), also has a turbulent relationship with his father (and the rest of the town), which drives several major storylines.
In a small town, she can no longer remain a detached, anonymous physician and is forced to involve herself in her patients’ complex personal lives, eccentricities, and dark secrets.
Strong-willed tavern owner Louise “Lou” Duval (Alison Bruce) functions as the social heart of the town, while midwife Rhonda Beale (Teresa Woodham) doubles as the town’s hairdresser.
The show was filmed extensively on location in and around the scenic rural outskirts of Auckland, capturing the region’s lush, green landscapes.
Mercy Peak was a massive ratings winner for TVNZ and dominated local television accolades.
The series won Best Drama Series at the New Zealand Television Awards and secured multiple acting trophies for its ensemble cast (most notably for Sara Wiseman and Alison Bruce.
