Even though this romantic comedy was about the daughter of the President of the United States, the intention was to first make it a show about making a marriage work in the modern world and then to bring in the complications brought about by Nancy’s extraordinary political ties.
In fact, the viewers never got to see the President, nor did any of the episodes focus on Washington politics.
Nancy Smith (Renne Jarrett) had fallen head over heels in love with a veterinarian named Adam Hudson (John Fink) from Center City, Iowa. Their romance was like any other romance – except for the Secret Service agents who followed them everywhere – Agent Turner (William Bassett) and Agent Rodriguez (Ernesto Macias).
Nancy also had a chaperone, Abby Townsend (Celeste Holm).
Nancy had a pixie-like quality but was the impulsive one, while Adam was very homespun and down to Earth. They were both extremely insecure about meeting one another’s family and friends, fearing they wouldn’t fit in.
Adam was raised by his uncle Everett Hudson (Robert F Simon), who remained by his side. Other regular characters were the President’s assistant Tom Daily (Frank Aletter) and local reporter Willie Maxwell (Eddie Applegate).
Less than two months after the show’s debut, Adam and Nancy were pronounced man and wife (on 5 November 1970) in episode number eight, titled ‘Here Comes The Groom’
Nancy lasted only a few more weeks as competition from The CBS Thursday Night Movie and ABC’s The Odd Coupleproved insurmountable.
