Smiley Greevins (Colin Petersen) is a cheeky, mischievous, imaginative little boy who lives in the small town of Murrumbilla in the Australian outback.
His father Bill (Reg Lye) is a poor drover who is often away from home. Much to the exasperation of his overworked wife, Ma Greevins (Margaret Christensen), Bill is also very fond of the drink.
Smiley is determined to buy himself a bicycle he has seen in a store catalogue – “four quid delivered to your door” – and takes on odd jobs in an effort to save up enough money. Slowly, the threepences and sixpences mount up but Smiley always seems to get caught up in some sort of misadventure that sets him back.
The direction is poor and the acting is amateurish (with the exception of imported star Ralph Richardson) but the Australian scenery compensates.
