Formed in 1981 in Collie, a dusty mining town south of Perth in Western Australia, The Bamboos met with little success until they made their first trip to the eastern states.
Described by critics as an amalgam of Jason and The Scorchers and Perth pioneers The Scientists and labelled “cowpunk” and “Hoodoo Gurus clones”, their lyrical influences included an obsession with necrophilia, snuff movies, drinking and the wild side of love. The independent Citadel label signed the band, resulting in the release of a single, Virginia.
By the time their debut LP, Rarer Than Rocking Horse Shit, was released on vinyl, it was already three years old, having previously been available on cassette only.
