Dr McKinley Thompson (Paul Richards) – called ‘Dr Mac’ by almost everyone on the staff – was the chief resident psychiatrist at (fictitious) York Hospital in Los Angeles.
His superior, the director of the hospital’s psychiatric unit, was Dr Edward Raymer (Eduard Franz).
Running what amounted to an outpatient service for the emotionally distraught, they tried to help people who came to the clinic – and who were often on the verge of the breaking point of human emotion.
Their roles in the series were rather peripheral, as the action dealt more with the situations that had caused people to seek their help than with life at the hospital.
The ABC series first aired on 16 September 1963.
Guest stars included Rip Torn, John Cassavetes, Joey Heatherton, Eleanor Parker, Bradford Dillman, Anthony Franciosa, Gena Rowlands, James Caan and Robert Redford.
