This short-lived BBC panel game show presented a contest of words and wit played between competing teams from BBC television and radio shows.
John Junkin was the chairman asking the questions and Maggie Penn was the score girl. The series aired at 6.20 pm on Wednesdays between April and September 1969.
The debut episode featured Arthur Lowe and James Beck representing Dad’s Army versus Roy Hudd and Sheila Bernette representing The Roy Hudd Show (pictured above).
Primarily an opportunity to plug other BBC shows, Give Me Your Word provided something of an insight into the vocabulary of the stars: for example, Bernard Braden couldn’t spell ‘Excavating’ and Ray Barrett of The Troubleshooters believed ‘Rarja’ to be dictionary English!
