Martial arts expert Honey West (Anne Francis) took over the running of a private detective agency after inheriting the business and her partner, ex-Marine Sam Bolt (John Ericson), from her late father in this ABC crime drama series.
Sam made a promise that he would look after Honey and keep her out of trouble if anything should happen to her father, although the shapely (36-24-34) blonde Honey could certainly take care of herself.
Publicised as “television’s pretty private eyeful”, Honey (who had a pet ocelot named Bruce that she adored) was an expert at judo and had a black belt in karate.
Honey operated from her luxurious apartment at 6033 Del Mar Vista in Los Angeles, where a wall displaying various vases was actually the secret entrance to her lab behind the living room wall.
However, she often did her spying out of a travelling office-cum-spying van that was disguised as a delivery truck and had the name ‘H W Bolt & Co, TV Service’ emblazoned on its side.
The character had first appeared on an episode of Burke’s Law (“Honey West: Who Killed the Jackpot”) and was spun off into her own show with a cool array of high-tech gadgets: lipstick walkie-talkies, exploding smoke-bomb earrings, and a convertible sports car (complete with car phone).
The gimmicks failed to make up for poor production values, unimaginative scripts and the obvious use of a stuntman in a blonde wig for the fight scenes.
Based on the novels of the husband-and-wife writing team of GG Fickling, Honey West only lasted one season. Joseph Mullendore composed the opening theme Wild Honey and the closing signature Sweet Honey.
