This short BBC2 series – transmitted in July and August 1965 – was a modern day reworking of the story of Theseus and the Minotaur in the Labyrinth on the island of Crete.
King Aegeus of the legend became powerful industrial tycoon Edward Gargan – known as “EG” – (John Phillips) who was approaching the end of his reign and surrounded by rivals intent on his downfall.
The project he had conceived as his crowning achievement – the first nuclear-powered aircraft – had proven costly in human lives. Fourteen volunteers had been sent every year to the sinister atomic plant on the remote island of Mitremos, and none had ever returned.
EG decides the experiment must end, but his colleagues on the board of Edward Gargan International have other plans. And so – for different reasons – has Theodore (David Andrews), a mysterious stranger who visits EG’s wife, Myra (Sarah Lawson) and then the tycoon himself, armed with a Luger pistol.
