Riptide was an Australian-made action adventure series with American Ty Hardin as sailor Moss Andrews (and a predominantly British camera crew).
The show was shot on film with an eye on the international market and featured plenty of stunning Aussie location footage. The series was filmed primarily around Sydney’s Northern beaches (and was originally to be titled Charter Boat).
The show had Andrews as an American sailing to Australia to try and get over the loss of his (Australian) wife who had been killed in a car crash. Andrews then decides to stay and help his father in law run a charter boat business.
Riptide has the distinction of being the first hour-long colour show produced in Australia and had a budget per episode of between $50,000 and $100,000 – a lot of money at the time.
Guest stars included Rowena Wallace, Chips Rafferty, Helen Morse, Tony Ward and Jacki Weaver.
