1 9 6 6 – 1 9 6 7
Take a group of kids, put them together, and before the day is over, they’ll inevitably form a club.
Hanna-Barbera‘s Space Kidettes were no different, except that their clubhouse was shaped like a Mercury space capsule and located in outer space, and the kids wore space uniforms and helmets and had jet-packs.
These four kids – Countdown, Scooter, Snoopy and Jenny and their dog, Pupstar – just wanted to hang out and explore the vastness of the galaxies.
Unfortunately, they were forced to spend most of their time foiling the evil plans of bearded Captain Skyhook and his incompetent sidekick Static (pictured below), who coveted the treasure map the kids had.
The cantankerous British captain (a parody of Captain Hook from Peter Pan) often vented his frustrations on Static when his plans went awry.
Static was half the captain’s height and the two maintained a relationship similar to that of Laurel and Hardy, though Skyhook’s bark was invariably worse than his bite.
The Space Kidettes were seemingly oblivious to the evil plans of Captain Skyhook, and whenever they ended up defeating him, it appeared to be by sheer luck. Often the Kidettes, Skyhook and Static would rescue each other when a villainous third party (such as a space dragon) intervened.
“Boil them in moon oil!” was Captain Skyhook’s favourite threat to his young rivals, although he never followed through with it.
It was never explained why these kids spent so much time away from their parents but it didn’t matter. The idea of floating through space with your best friends and a faithful dog was enough to make this cartoon a favourite for any kid.
