The setting for this BBC drama was a large comprehensive school in the (fictional) Scottish town of Strathaird where the stories revolved around the pupils, their parents and teachers, and one teacher in particular – the impetuous and idealistic young Ian Craig (John Cairney).
Strathaird School was organised on a house system with six housemasters each keeping an eye on the problems of the 300 children in their care.
Such a man was Ian Craig – a scientist who taught physics, believed in education in the widest sense of the word, and as a housemaster was inevitably involved in the lives of others both in the school and in the town.
Craig’s idealism was matched and stemmed by the practicality of the older headmaster, Mr Robinson (Leonard Maguire). His wife, Margaret (Ellen McIntosh) regularly had an axe to grind about how much money her husband could earn if he was doing something else.
Many Scottish writers contributed to the stories, produced and filmed north of the border. Among them; Jack Gerson, Tom Wright, Ian Kennedy Martin, Larry Forrester and Jack Ronder (who was himself a teacher).
