Londoner Sid Turner (Carry On star Sid James) and Welshman Vic Evans (Victor Spinetti) were middle-aged bachelors who worked as clerks in a City insurance firm and were thoroughly fed up with their lot.
Throwing in their jobs, they purchased Clover Farm, a smallholding of 40 acres in Finchley with 12 dairy cows, 40 poultry, two sows and a mare.
However, with problematic livestock to look after and the insular locals difficult to get along with – especially the local copper (played by Bill Pertwee) and their next-door neighbour Gerald Bromley-Jones (Gerald Flood) – they soon realised that country life was not as calm and trouble-free as they had first thought, and their rustic dream became more of a nightmare.
The first series was shot in black & white in the studio, while the second was shot in colour, primarily on location. This proved too expensive for Thames Television and, as a result, the show was dropped at the end of the second series.
Two In Clover was created and written by British sitcom veterans Vince Powell and Harry Driver. Guest stars included Victor Platt, John Inman, Hermione Baddeley, John Le Mesurier and Charles Lloyd Pack. Freddie Trueman played himself in the final episode.
