This BBC2 series featured a series of plays based on the lives of real people during the Edwardian era.
The plays presented the lives of Charles Rolls (Robert Powell) and Henry Royce (Michael Jayston), the founders of Rolls Royce; Horatio Bottomley (Timothy West), a financier, journalist, MP and notorious swindler who founded and edited John Bull; E. Nesbit (Judy Parfitt) the author of The Railway Children; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes (Nigel Davenport); Robert Baden-Powell (Ron Moody), “hero of Mafeking” and the founder of the Boy Scout movement; Marie Lloyd (Georgia Brown) – “The reluctant juggler” – and her role in the 1907 Music Hall strike; Frances, the Countess of Warwick – known as “Daisy” to her friends (Virginia McKenzie) – who became the mistress of Edward VII, and politician David Lloyd George (Anthony Hopkins) whose sexual indiscretions threatened his ambitions to be Prime Minister.
