Out-of-work executive Jack Byron Lever (Ian Holm) plans to make a million pounds in a month.
He hires private detective Ken Durban (John Stratton) to compile a dossier on five tax-dodging people with numbered Swiss bank accounts who made their money through questionable means. They are assisted in this endeavour by Oswald Kohler (Clifford Parrish), a senior Swiss bank official.
Jack then uses this information to blackmail them for £200,000 each.
Among Jack’s targets are the Balfours (Ivor Roberts and Brenda Bruce), American magnate Lansing (Ray McAnally), and Sir James Western (Laurence Naismith) and his philandering playboy sons, Guy (Julain Holloway) and Michael (Simon Cadell).
Prunella Ransome co-starred as Jack’s girlfriend, with Leonard Sachs (the artful artist of alliteration from The Good Old Days) as Schaffer, the bank’s director.
Gordon Jackson played Franklin, a diligent Treasury investigator intent on tracking down tax evaders and maybe even nailing Jack en route.
The six-part ITV series was written and created by former journalist Wilfred Greatorex, who also created The Power Gameand Hine.
