Mobile One was a short-lived adventure series that began its run on ABC on 12 September 1975 and lasted until January 1976.
Veteran news reporter Peter Campbell (Jackie Cooper) was once tops in his field and a highly respected television journalist. But his career spiralled downwards in a whirlpool of alcohol and he hit rock bottom.
Thanks to Maggie Spencer (Julie Gregg), the news producer at local Los Angeles television station KONE, Peter was given a second chance. Now he rides around in “Mobile One”, a radio dispatch car, hell-bent on covering every kind of story – both hard news and human interest.
The driver of the car is Doug McKnight (Mark Wheeler), a cameraman half Campbell’s age.
Mobile One came from the Jack Webb stable and the format was similar to other Webb properties, combining the length and type of stories from Emergency! with the kind of transportation and partnership on Adam-12.
The series initially had an impossible time slot on Fridays, where it was up against Sanford and Son, M*A*S*H and Chico and The Man. In November, ABC moved the show to Monday nights, where the competition was Rhoda and Phyllis on the East Coast and All In The Family on the West Coast – out of the frying pan, into the fire.
