Chris Guthrie (Vivien Heilbron) lives with her family on a bleak farm in North East Scotland at the turn of the 20th century.
On her mother’s death, she assumes the running of the farm with her stern, stiff-necked father and her older brother, but the men fall out, leaving Chris and her father to manage it alone.
When her father dies, Chris considers abandoning the farm but decides to carry on alone.
She marries a young farmer, Ewan Tavendale (James Grant) and they have a baby and are happy for the first time. But with the outbreak of the First World War, Ewan enlists and is killed in France.
Produced by BBC Scotland, this was their first colour production. Based on a novel by LG Gibbon.
Sunset Song was turned into a feature film starring Agyness Deyn in 2015.
