Channel 4 presented this low-budget late-night comedy series featuring sketches and live music by writers, performers and bands new to television.
The show was recorded in front of a live audience at the Town and Country Club in Kentish Town, London, and hosted by Paul Merton (who was initially hired as the warm-up man but proved to be so good that he was asked to host the show).
Producers Bob Clarke and David MacMahon (whose production company ‘Chapter One’ conceived the idea) spent three months touring the clubs, fringe theatre shows and alternative cabaret venues of Britain, looking for writers and performers who could adapt their talents to television.
Music was by a band called The Bouncing Czecks.
