73 x 30 minute episodes
This syndicated comedy series from the prolific team of Sid and Marty Kroftt (Bugaloos, HR Pufnstuf, Lidsville et al) was like a US version of Spitting Image, with puppets of various American political figures and celebrities meeting in the Washington bar of the title – located not far from the White House.
Puppet characters included President and Mrs Reagan; former presidents Carter, Ford, and Nixon; assorted news types like Andy Rooney, Dan Rather, and Ted Koppel; and celebrities such as Woody Allen, Jack Nicholson, Cher and Oprah Winfrey.
The cast of puppets was presided over by bartender Fred Willard, the only regular human character on the show.
Each episode brought a celebrity guest into the bar, with Martin Mull, Robin Leach, Bob Uecker, and Betty White appearing early on.
The humour was satirical, often taking potshots at politicians and the political process.
