This Granada production was based on the novel of the same name by Jean Webster, the sequel to her earlier novel, Daddy-Long-Legs.

Sallie McBride (Vanessa Knox-Mawer) is a young, independent woman who agrees to temporarily take over the vacated superintendency of the John Grier Home orphanage in 1905.

Her “enemy” is Dr Robin MacRae (Patrick Malahide) who she refers to as “Sandy” because he has sandy coloured hair.

They are both intensely dedicated to their work and improving the lives of the children in their care. Sallie loves her “little chicks”, as she calls them.
